Where?
Our destination for Project Shine 2010 is Guangxi Autonomous Region (广西壮族自治区). The Guangxi region is one of the most beautiful areas in China, as it is characterized by mountains and terraces. Guangxi is listed as an “autonomous region” in China’s map. There are many different ethnic groups within Guangxi such as the “Miao Tribe”; they are an ethnic minority group. They are the native people whom inhabit this land with its beautiful traditional festive clothing and dances.

High Schools in Guangxi Autonomous Region
Many family members of students living in the Guangxi region are farmers and have very low income. Many of their monthly income is less than $150 RMB, which is equivalent to $21 Canadian dollars. China has listed some regions to be “national level poverty-stricken” area.
These families usually live in the mountainous area and it may take the students 4-5 hours to walk to school everyday. Therefore students must live in the dormitory within the school. Even though now the students don’t have to pay for the tuition fee because of China’s “9 year free education” policy, but “room and board” plus the cost for necessary stationary supplies and text books adds a huge burden to these families.
Since 2002, CRRS has been helping with 6 High schools from different counties with in the Guangxi Province. Other than helping students in general, in particular, CRRS have supported three classes named “Hope for the Nation” for outstanding students in the poverty-stricken area.
We will be teaching English to one of the sponsored schools in Guangxi region, stay tune for the final confirmation of which county/school Project Shine 2010 is going to!
See you in Project Shine 2010!
